Side Effects Of Licorice

It is likely safe when taken in small amounts for small period of time. It is possibly safe when taken in large amounts for medical purposes and it is possibly not good when it is taken in large amounts for short periods or when taken in small amounts for longer periods. Following are the common side effects which may be caused if it is not taken with precautions.

Precautions & Warnings

Pregnancy & Feeding: Avoid using licorice while pregnant because it can cause early delivery and miscarriage. It should also be avoided in breast-feeding period due to lack of information.

Heart Disease: Licorice can trigger the body to store more water which can worse congestive heart failure. Moreover it can also cause irregular heartbeat. Due to these things, one must avoid licorice if he has any heart disease.

Hormone-sensitive conditions such as breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids: If you have any condition which get worse due to estrogen then avoid licorice as it can trigger estrogen in your body.

High blood pressure: If you have any blood pressure irregularities. Please don’t take licorice.

Hypertonia: It is a muscle condition caused by nerve problems.Licorice can cause the level of potassium to drop in the blood. This can make hypertonia worse. Avoid licorice if you have hypertonia.

Hypokalemia: Licorice can lower potassium in the blood. If your potassium is already low, licorice might make it too low. Don’t use licorice if you have this condition.

Kidney disease: If you have kidney problems then don’t use licorice.

Sexual problems: It can reduce the amount of testosterone which will reduce sexual desire in men and women.

Surgery:  Licorice might interfere with blood pressure control during and after surgery. Stop taking licorice at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.
